Forget Windows 11 — deepin Linux 20.2.2 doesn’t require your PC to have a TPM – BetaNews

Windows 11 looks quite beautiful, but let's be honest... it is pretty much just Windows 10 with a fresh coat of paint. Sadly, Microsoft is requiring some pretty strict hardware requirements for the upcoming operating system, meaning many people could find themselves unable to upgrade. Even worse, the company has provided confusing communications regarding TPM requirements. Thankfully, even if Microsoft thinks your perfectly fine computer is obsolete, the Linux community doesn't think that. In other words, if your computer is incompatible with Windows 11 due to a lack of a TPM chip or other hardware issue, it can still run…

Arch Linux changes vm.max_map_count to match Fedora, Ubuntu for better gaming – GamingOnLinux

Nice to see more Linux distributions make changes to ensure the gaming experience is good. Arch Linux is now following Fedora and Ubuntu on upping the vm.max_map_count value. The issue is the default from the upstreaming Linux kernel is just too low for some games like The Finals, Hogwarts Legacy, DayZ, Counter-Strike 2 and various others causing them to crash. Not a good experience for end-users. Announced in an official news post: The vm.max_map_count paramater will be increased from the default 65530 value to 1048576. This change should help address performance, crash or start-up issues for a number of memory intensive applications, particularly for (but…

iXsystems Announces TrueCommand Multi-FreeNAS and TrueNAS Management – ServeTheHome

IXsystems TrueCommand Beta Performance Reporting I normally let Cliff handle these pieces, but I wanted to take this myself. iXsystems announced TrueCommand and that is a big deal. I actually have been pushing on the concept of a multi-FreeNAS and TrueNAS management plane with the company for years. Many STH readers, including one I met from Malaysia this week at Dell Tech World, use FreeNAS and TrueNAS for their customer NAS deployments. In the meantime, the company has been executing on its vision for multi-system management, and it looks good so far. iXsystems TrueCommand for FreeNAS and TrueNAS The iXsystems…

Check out the Manjaro Linux lead talk about the Orange Pi NEO gaming handheld – GamingOnLinux

The Orange Pi NEO is an exciting looking gaming device, following in the footsteps of the Steam Deck being powered by Linux. Recently the price was revealed, and the Manjaro Linux head Philip Müller did a talk on it. This is the first time I've seen Orange Pi themselves actually posting about it publicly (at least in the West). Most of the communication on this has been from the Manjaro Linux team directly so far, and the video mostly goes over what has already been announced about it. Still, it's nice to see an increasing presence for the upcoming release.…

Open-source storage that doesn’t suck? Our man tries to break TrueNAS – The Register

Review Data storage is difficult, and ZFS-based storage doubly so. There's a lot of money to be made if you can do storage right, so it's uncommon to see a storage company with an open-source model deliver storage that doesn't suck. I looked at TrueNAS from iXsystems, which, importantly, targets the SMB and midmarket with something that is theoretically more resilient than a Synology. That's really odd. Not a lot of companies do that, so it intrigued me. I'd also had a few interesting conversations with some Reg readers about the dearth of storage offerings for the "small, but not…
