If hosted by an ISP, know where they want you to place your publicly accessible file (i.e. your site). You will use ftp to move files back and forth along with changing permissions on files and directories.

If your hosting service allows you to extract compressed files, it is highly recommended that you upload the entire install package and extract it at your remote site. This is a good rule of thumb to follow when transferring multiple files as it less likely to produce corrupted files. If you are unsure if your host supports this feature, please ask them. Normally you will have something in your sites control panel for creating/extracting archives if they support that operation.
