  • Content: Your blocks content (you can use HTML in here)

Modify Blocks Screen

The first links you see allow you to sort your blocks by Display All Blocks, Only Left Blocks, or Only Right Blocks.

The grid below this displays information on the blocks your site already has set.

  • Side: Which side of the web site the block is displayed on.
  • Order: The display order.
  • Visible for: Who the block will be displayed for.
  • Position: The blocks position (top to bottom)
  • Visible: Whether the block is visible or not.
  • Block type: What block type is set for this block.
  • Action: Allows you to reconfigure or delete your blocks.

Note: If you are new to MPN, your first step in here would be to turn the blocks you do not want invisible. That way they won't be displayed on your page, but you can always go back and see how they were configured.

Random Banners

Random Banners are not to be mixed up with the Banner system that PHP-Nuke provides. Random Banners are shown in a side block. Make sure that your Random Banners is not to wide for your side blocks.

Quote of the day

The quote of the day menu option simply allows you to enter a quote that will be used as a random quote, and to give credit to the originator of the quote.

My Message II

With My Message II, you can add static messages on thee different levels of you web site:

  1. On the Home page
  2. On a special categories page
  3. On a topic page

On the Home page

If you want one or more static text blocks on the center of your home page, you need this option. A good and famous example of usage is the small block with text about the banners on the official myPHPNuke site. You can enter the message text for this block directly from the My Message II admin page. When you click the Add button, you get this page where you can enter the message text.

The system gives you an acknowledgement when the message text is saved to the database.

After you entered the message, you can view it from the categories page of MPN where you can edit or delete the message(s) too.

When you are finished adding or editing your message text, you can check it out on the home page of your site. The example I added in this manual looks like this when I browse the home page of the site.

On a special categories page

Before you can use this option, you need to create at least one category record first. You can do so using the My Message II Admin page.

The category table is also used by the "regular" news items of MPN, so when you already added some categories for the "regular" stories, you can use them here too.

While writing this manual page, we have found out that this has never worked in myPHPNuke 1.8.8.

On a topic page

You can add a static message to every topic that is available on you site. A new install of MPN is pre-configured with a lot of topics that you can alter if you like. When you delete a message by clicking the Delete button, the system will ask you for confirmation.

Banners

PHP-Nuke provides a basic banner system which allows you to have your own banners stats and control them in the way you want. The section is self explanatory so we won't go into much detail here.

Table 7.2.  Banner Settings

Current Active Banners This table shows the banners that are running right now on your site along with the related stats for each banner. To Edit or Delete a banner click on the appropriate link.
Finished Banners When a banner reaches the number of impressions set by the admin when adding it to the site, it will automatically stop being displayed and move into this table. As in the table above, you will get the stats related to the banner along with options to edit and delete.
Advertising Clients This table shows all the data for your clients and how many active banners are running at the moment. ( Note on adding a banners: If you want the banner to have unlimited impressions enter 0 in the field Impressions Purchased ).
Client Statistics

When you setup a new client, you can assign a login and password for that client. This feature allows the client to view his or her banner stats in real time, change the banner URL, or request an automated email report of the banner stats. The URL for this option is:

http://yourdomain.com/banners.php?op=login

Ephemerids

What are Ephemerids? They are past events that you think are significant. The configuration is very easy. Ephemerids are part of the block system, so you can choose where you want it displayed. In order to use this feature, you need to activate this feature in Nuke Preferences and activate the block in the "blocks" setup.

To add a new ephemerid enter the date of your choice and then add your description for that event. For example, you can set one event like: Day 12, Month 10, Year 1492. Colon arrives in America. Then when a user comes to your page on October 12 of any year they will see the message "Colon arrives in America".

To edit or delete an ephemerid Select the day and month for the event you want to edit/delete.

Surveys/Polls

Be cool and change your Surveys frequently. To add a new Poll, fill out the form on this page.

Poll Title: Title for your new Poll.

Options: Please fill in at least two options otherwise its not a poll. You do not need to fill all the fields here.

Delete Polls: To delete one or more existing Polls, click on theDelete Poll link. This will take you to another page with the list of all your site's polls. Check the poll(s) you want to delete and click on theRemove button. Remember: there is no confirmation dialog when you delete a poll!

NOTE: Please double check your title and options since you will be unable to edit the poll after it has been created. Editing is not allowed in order to avoid unfair manipulate the surveys once they have been posted.

Headlines

In the Headlines section you can activate or deactivate Headlines that are displayed in the Headlines block. The Headlines grabber works only for RDF/XML files, plain text files will not work. myPHPNuke inherited an extensive headline database from PHPNuke, so in order to display headlines from one of the sites in the list, activate that site. MPN 188 default installs myPHPNuke.com headlines on the lower right of your mainpage so if you don't want these headlines displayed you will have to deactivate it. Headlines are automatically updated every hour.

Note: In some cases, activating the headlines block can slow down page loads, especially when the scrolling option is enabled. Please don't edit the code to decrease the update time! Webmasters don't like other webmasters abusing their bandwidth. Furthermore, how many sites do you know that update their news every hour?

To add a new Headline to the database enter name of the site, the URL for the site, and the absolute path to the RDF/XML file. The Status of the headline can be Active or Inactive (Inactive is default). If you wish to activate the new headline change the status to "active" before saving.

To change the status for one headline, use theEdit option and select the desired status. You can also edit the other fields here as well.

To delete a headline click on the Delete option.

Note: The scrolling option for Headlines is set in myPHPNuke preferences. Look for Display headlines in a scrolling box.

Partners

This page allows you to set links to another web site that will count hits. You can implement the partner system by creating a Partner site type block in the Blocks Admin.

The first section lists your partners, how many hits the partner link sent, the URL, image and description. It also give you the options to edit or delete your partners.

Add a New Partner: Just enter the URL to your image (blocks are 160 pixels wide), the URL to link to, and the description. Then click the Add Partner button, and create a partner site block in the Blocks Administration Page.

The author of this manual forgot to add, how to create a block, and also what if a block can not be created, ie, when all the needed info is entered, and 'Creat Block' is clicked and nothing happens, what then?

New blocks are created by selection the blocks menu option in the admin menu.

When the creation of a block doesn't work, I would advise you to check the table mpn_blocks in your database.
