Modules & Misc. Settings

This is the first place where you should start your site administration. In this section, you can modify all the phpNuke related features for your site. One of the best features of myPHPNuke is that you can customize your site to fit your needs. The following is a description of these options:

General Site Info

(NOTE: The first six lines are the most important fields for you to fill out)

Table 6.2.  General Site Info Options

Site Name In this field, enter the name for your web site.
Site URL As of version 1.8.8_8, this URL is only provided so you can verify the correct path has been determined to your myPHPNuke installation. If the path is incorrect, you will need to manually change extended configuration settings in the file core_UserConstants.php. Please see the administration section of this manual for more details.
Printer Friendly Page Logo This is the logo you want to be placed on top of the Printer Friendly Pages. If you want your users to save on ink, give them a black and white logo on these pages.
Site Slogan The slogan will be displayed under your logo in all the pages for your site. The exact location may vary according to the chosen theme. If you don't want a slogan just leave it blank.
Site Start Date This is where you can set the starting date of your web site. This information will be visible to the users only on the stats page (stats.php).
Administrator Email This is the email address you want associated with the administrative account. This will be used as the "reply to" address when the system sends emails to the users.
Mail Delivery Method Choose between PHP and SMTP. When your server has it's own mailserver running which is sendmail compliant, the preferred setting will be PHP. When your server is using another mailserver or even the mailserver on a different machine, you will want to set this to SMTP. You can use SMTP also when your run your own server on a DSL account and you want to send mails via your provider's SMTP server.
SMTP Server When you have chosen to use SMTP as mail delivery protocol, you must specify the IP address, machine name or the DNS name of the SMTP server.
Number of Items in TOP Page You have a TOP page (top.php) where the visitors can view the top read articles (most commented, the best poll, etc.). If you select 10 for example, you will have a TOP 10 page.
Stories Number in the Home How many stories do you want to display on your Home page? A good number is 10, but you can select this depending on your activity. Remember that registered users can change this value to whatever they want. So, this is just a default value for non-registered users.
Stories in Old Articles Box This is the number of stories that show in the Past Articles block, which by default, will show on the right side of your home page.
Activate Ultramode? Ultramode is a plain text file located at root dir of your site. By default this value is set to NO. If you change this, be sure to CHMOD 666 the file in order to write it. In this file will be the last 10 news headlines of your site with assorted info, fields (or news) separated by %%. This file is used to let other sites put your news on their site. The best method is to deactivate this feature and use backend.php file, which is in RDF/XML format.
Allow Anonymous to Post? If you want to allow anonymous (non-registered users) to post comments, select Yes, otherwise select No.
Default Theme for your site Select the default theme for your entire site. Registered users have the ability to change the theme as well. This value is valid only for non-registered users, or registered users who have not selected a theme.
Select the Language for your site No explanation is needed here, select the language you want your site displayed in. If you want to speed up page loading, you can also select to Hard encode the site. This feature will encode your pages to the language selected and bypass the translation function.
Locale Time Format Select the Locale format you want. Locales are little databases with the date, time, and other location information. Some Unix/Linux systems have the locales already installed. If this is the case just select the one you want, otherwise install the Locales you need. Usually, the Locales are installed under /usr/share/locale directory. If you are having problems installing Locale files, please contact your hosting provider.
Server Time Offset Choose a time offset when your server doesn't run in the same time zone as which is default for your language.

Banners

Table 6.3.  Banner Settings

Activate Banners on your Site? Select yes if you want banners on your site. PHP-Nuke has incorporated a basic banners system. If you active the banners and reload the Preferences page you will see a new menu called Banner Administration, where you can configure whatever you want. If you want to use some other banner software, select No.
Your IP for hit counts. If you do not want your IP to be recorded as a banner hit then enter in your IP into the form field. If you have activated banners on your site, we recommend you do this in order to be fair. Be honest here! This obviously will only work if you have a static IP.

Footer Messages

Table 6.4.  Footer Messages Settings

Footer Lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 These are the text, or HTML comments that will be shown on the bottom of each page as the footer. Normally you will find copyright messages, webmaster email, credits, etc. If you do not need all four lines, then leave the extras blank We would appreciate it if you give some credit to MPN here.

Backend Configuration

Backend is the script that generates headlines from your news items (index page) and serves them to other websites for displaying your headlines or to RSS-Readers.

Table 6.5.  Backend Settings

Backend Title This is where you set the site title if you intend to allow syndication of your site. The auto-generated XML/RDF file includes the latest 10 news articles you have posted on your site.
Backend Language The language you want the backend file to appear in. Usually you would want this the same as your site language.
Backend Image URL The absolute (complete) URL of the image/logo of your site. This is useful if you have a MyNetscape Channel. Be sure to include the http:// at the beginning.
Backend Image Width and Height Sets a static width and height for the Backend Image. Be reasonable here with your image size. A good upper limit would be 100px width and 50px height.

Web Links

Table 6.6.  Web Links Settings

Links per Page The maximum number of links to show on each page for the Web Links.
Hits to be Popular The number of hits a link needs in order to be listed as popular. Popular (Best) links will show a little graphic star and will also be listed on "Popular" links page.
Number of Links as New The number of links you want to display per page on the "New" links page. Links are sorted by creation date.
Number of Links as BestThe number of links you want to display per page on the "Top Rated" links page. The Top Rated links are links that have been rated by the users of your site.
Links in Search ResultsThe number of links you want to display per page after a search has been performed.

Mail New Stories

PHP-Nuke has the ability to send an email to the administrator each time a user submits a new article. In this section you can configure the options for this feature.

Table 6.7.  Mail New Stories To Admin

Notify new submissions by email? Select Yes if you want to be notified when a new article has been submitted on your site.
Email to send the message Specify the email address you want the notification sent to.
Email Subject Enter your own subject message or just use the default message.
Email Message The message body content you want for the email. This can be blank if you want.
Email Account The email account to show in the From field of the email. This also acts as the reply to address. This is not really necessary since the mail will be sent to you in most cases.

Comments Moderation

Table 6.8.  Comments Moderation Settings

Type of Moderation Select No Moderation, Moderation by Administrator, or Moderation by Registered Users.

Comments Options

Table 6.9.  Comment Options Settings

Comments Limit in Bytes Selects the maximum number of bytes for comments. If the comment text is larger than this value, the comment will show a link to the rest of the comment. This works much like news articles on the main page.
Anonymous Default Name By default, Non-registered users are shown as Anonymous. You can change the name of all non-registered users to whatever you choose. This name will be shown with all Comments, Articles, and Forum posts that are submitted by non-registered users.

Voting Booth Options

Table 6.10.  Voting Booth Options

Max Poll Options Set the maximum number of options the Poll can have.
Scale of Result Bar Set a number to set the width and scale of the results bar. This is normally a multiple of 100. In almost all cases you will want to leave this value at it's default of 1.
Allow users to vote twice? If NO is selected, the system will set a cookie with a 24 hour duration to prevent the user from voting twice in that period. The user will also see a message in the poll result window informing them of this restriction. If YES is selected, users can vote as many times as they want. Use this setting with care as it can introduce bias into the poll results.

Registration email message text

When you use the option to send the password to a new registered user by email, you can enclose a long HTML formatted message in the registration message. This text is placed in the email message after the loginname and password is shown.

You can use this registration email text to specify the rules of your site to the new user, promote usage of your forums, mention some hot topics, invite him to contribute to your site and specify the link to your website. Remember that there are still a lot of people around the world that might visit your website and maybe want to register for the first time in their life to a real portal site like yours. Give them some help and hints on how to get the most of value from the usage of your website.

Some Graphics Stuff

It is recommended you leave these options alone. There may be cases where changing these values from the defaults could cause some of your image links to be broken.

Table 6.11.  Site Graphics And Fonts Settings

Topics Images Path The path to the folder where your topic images are stored.
User Menu Images Path The path to the folder where your user menu images are stored.
Admin Menu Images Path The path to the folder where your admin menu images are stored.
Graphics in Administration Menu? Select yes if you want images instead of text for your administration menu.
Site Font This setting is relatively useless since the theme CSS normally controls font settings. You can set a default font in the event the theme does not define a font type.

Miscellaneous

Table 6.12.  Miscellaneous Settings

Articles Number in Admin Set the maximum number of articles to be shown in the Administration section. These are the articles listed below the menu on the main PHP-Nuke page.
Minimum users password length. It is recommended you require a minimum of 6-8 characters for user passwords. Remember, the longer the password, the more secure it will be.
Activate HTTP Referrers? This feature stores links to pages that have linked your site. This is a useful feature for determining how to market your site, or if you just want to know where your traffic is coming from.
How many referrers you want as Maximum? This sets the maximum number of referrers the database will store for display. Set this as high or low as you want, but keep in mind, the higher the number the larger the database table will be.
Activate Comments in Polls? Used to allow users to post comments on polls/surveys.
Activate Ephemerids System? Activate or deactivate the Ephemerids system.
